In the late 80s Steinway & Sons got a clue, not everyone is able or desires to spend $100,000 on a grand piano. Kawai agreed to assist Steinway & Sons in their efforts to construct a production caliber, more affordable piano in Kawai’s factory using Kawai’s workers. This partnership was forged in 1991 and remains strong through today.
Because Kawai builds the Boston piano, Bostons are naturally quite good! However, much like a luxury automobile, the value of a Boston piano drops precipitously.
Case in point:
The MSRP of a new Boston 5’10” GP-178 grand piano is $37,900 according to PianoBuyer.com. This preowned Boston 5’10” GP-178 is being offered for sale at just $11,500!
At just a 1/3 of its new value and many decades of life remaining in this instrument, why would anyone with any sense at all stroke a check for triple?
