You must consider multiple things before finalizing an alternative. It includes estimating your budget, the place you would be putting it, and if you should buy a digital or acoustic piano. Let’s check out the differences and help you choose one.

What is the basic difference?

Acoustic pianos are the original pianos having a solid wood case that cradles the soundboard. It comes with 220 strings, hammers, and several other movable parts.

On the other hand, digital pianos are electronic and do not come with many moving parts. Built-in speakers produce sampled piano sounds. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. So, which one should you go for? You need to make some considerations before selecting one. Important ones are:

Space: Digital pianos take lessor space in comparison to acoustic pianos. Grand pianos would take anywhere between 5-to-9-foot space in your house. Hence, if you are short on space, go with digital pianos.

Noise Level: Digital pianos are not as loud as acoustic pianos. You have an option to lower the volume but acoustic ones do not give you any such feature.

Considering the piano player: Experts would always prefer an acoustic piano. But if you are a beginner or an intermediate player, digital pianos would be fine.

Estimating your Budget: New acoustic pianos might cost you anywhere between $2000 to $50000. You may also buy a second-hand piano for a lower price. Electronic pianos are comparatively cheaper.

Upsides of Acoustic Piano

Organic sound is primarily the best thing about an acoustic piano. Electronic piano manufacturers have been trying to improve the quality but are still far behind. Playing classical music on an acoustic piano is a treat especially on the beautiful and sturdy piece of furniture that can add elegance to any house.

Downsides of Acoustic Piano

Its size and weight are the major downsides. Once you have placed it in your house, it would remain there as it is difficult for anyone to move easily. The least a baby grand piano weighs is about 500 lbs. A piano needs to be tuned regularly which is highly dependent on usage which generally people would only do twice a year. Additionally, you should be dusting the piano at least once each week using a soft cloth.

Upsides of Digital Pianos

Each year manufacturers launch improved versions of pianos that are better than their predecessors. Some products come fitted with wooden keys that respond like acoustic pianos. You may also find options that have actual hammers coupled with similar striking action despite having no strings for the hammer to hit. Further, the sound produced by them is better and at times it becomes difficult to differentiate them from an acoustic piano.

Also, digital pianos are lighter and you can easily move them from one room to another. You also don’t have to tune them which saves you both money and time. The major advantage is that you won’t be disturbing your neighbors as you have the option to lower the volume or connect your headphones. Other advantages include MIDI capability, the option to record your sessions, multiple sound choices, etc. Lastly, they are more affordable as the most expensive option would be around $2000.

Downsides of Digital Pianos

Notes don’t give the same feeling like an acoustic piano and this is one of the major reasons pianists don’t prefer the digital ones. However, some great products in recent years have transformed this belief and feel to an extent. Acoustic pianos are more sensitive to their surroundings as compared to digital pianos making the latter a less preferred option.

You will surely miss the feel of using a pedal, resonating each string with the other, a lively feel, vibration sound, etc. that isn’t possible for a digital piano to match. They also don’t have the wow factor as you could easily miss out on noticing a digital piano in a room but not the acoustic one.

Closing Remarks

It would be sensible to buy a digital piano if you are a beginner and not sure if you would be going to get on. However, if you have the budget and a decent experience of playing the piano, you should always be opting for an acoustic piano.

If you are planning to purchase a piano, contact Dave’s Piano Showroom and schedule an appointment. The showroom serves customers across Tampa Bay, FL.

Avett Ray Maness is determined that he won’t stop until he accomplishes his dreams and nothing, not even the fact that he’s blind, will slow him down or stand in his way. This is something that the people around him are loving as they listen to his renditions of classic songs like “Happy Together” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” People who watch him playing piano in front of massive crowds are so impressed that even his own mom says she sometimes forgets that he’s her son. She admits that she becomes a total “fan girl” who needs to be pinched so she can return to reality.

Who Avett Ray Maness Is

Avett was born with optic nerve hypoplasian (ONH). This is a congenital disorder that leaves the optic nerve underdeveloped. Being blind has affected the way that Avett learns and interacts with the world around him. This is because when we who are visually able see something our body reacts in a way that a blind person’s body can’t react. For this reason, blind children need to get more stimulus by rocking back and forth or spinning in circles. Doing so helps them focus and balance.

His mother goes on to explain that for Avett this was the piano. In fact, as soon as he could reach the piano’s keys, he was a natural when it came to playing piano. He started by teaching himself how to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” when he was only 11-months-old. He’s also managed to teach himself how to play guitar and has an instructor who teaches him new techniques with both instruments.

Avett’s Take on the Situation

Avett says that he enjoys singing and playing piano because it makes those around him happy. This is why it doesn’t bother him to perform before crowds of thousands of people. He says he hopes that by doing so he’s inspiring others to be more accepting of disabled people. His mother says that when you interact with him, you’ll get to see the world in a new and different way.

When you’re ready to have your child start playing piano you’ll want to buy them a piano from Dave’s Piano Showroom. Many customers have done so and found themselves very happy with the piano their child is using. Your child and their musical future deserve to be next so contact them today.

It shows that after 9 months of weekly piano lessons children’s IQs rose by at least three points in comparison to their peers who weren’t taking lessons. This supports the idea that children are learning more than their scales – they’re exercising a part of their brain that’s necessary in intellectual pursuits.

There are many facets involved in these lessons including memorization, expressing emotion, and learning about musical intervals and chords. The experience’s multidimensional is obviously motivating children’s IQ today. This really shouldn’t come as any surprise though since a decade ago, the University of Wisconsin’s Frances Rauscher led researchers in finding that simply listening to Mozart triggered temporary increases in spatial intelligence. Unfortunately, this was difficult to replicate in subsequent studies, but it allowed the idea that music and piano training can raise IQ to take hold in the scientific community.

What Recent Studies Demonstrate

In the most recent study into this matter, 12 6-year-old students in Toronto were given weekly voice or piano lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music. This age group was selected because their developing brains can still retain a lot of “plasticity” (the brain’s ability to change and adapt to environmental stimuli). Researchers felt that children under the age of 6 weren’t suitable because they couldn’t engage in rigorous lessons. Additionally, anyone under the age of 4 can’t start serious musical training. Another group of students were given free, weekly drama classes to separate the effect on IQ of training in the arts in general. There was also a group who received no classes at all.
Each student’s IQ was tested beforehand with the full Weschler intelligence test. This assesses various aspects of intellectual functioning in 10 different areas. After the three-hour initial assessment, the children attended first grade and then they were retested between first and second grade. While all the students displayed an increase in IQ of about 4.3 points, this was because they attended school. However, additional changes were noticed, including:
Children who took the drama class and those who took no classes at all didn’t have any increase in their IQ. However, children in the drama class did score higher regarding sociability probably because of the cooperative nature required in these classes.

Children who took voice or piano lessons had a slightly larger increase in their IQ – about 2.7 points higher. This small but significant increase was evident across the Weschler test’s broad spectrum.

What This all Means

This new study backs up other studies that were conducted in the past. While this work focuses on special intelligence (the ability to think through 3D puzzles without resorting to an actual model), it’s speculated that understanding music, especially learning how to translate musical symbols into sound, is transferring to other abilities since they share similar neuro pathways. For this reason, it would be ideal for children to all be able to take music lessons of some variety. This is something that we also believe at Dave’s Piano Showroom, which is why we invite you to come in and check out our wide array of instruments today.

These are the regions that are responsible for your coordination, hearing, sight, and movement. This ultimately influences your brain’s structure and function.

What Research Demonstrates in This Regard

Over the past two decades, several researchers have conducted studies of musicians vs. nonmusicians. One study was conducted by the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California. In their 5 year study that started in 2012 they reported differences in musicians’ brains in comparison to nonmusicians. Musicians have better language and mathematical skills, a higher IQ, and overall better academic achievement. There are also differences in musicians’ brains related to their hearing and movement.

How Being a Musician Impacts Children’s Development

In the research that’s compared children musicians to nonmusicians researchers have discovered that being a musician positively impacts a child in several ways, including:

Musicians can more accurately detect changes in pitch but both the musicians and nonmusicians could tell when the melodies were different. To researchers this indicated that musicians are more attentive.

Musicians’ brain pathways developed faster. This is the part of the brain that’s responsible for encoding and processing sound.

Even just two years of instrumental training can accelerate a child’s brain development and sound processing. This is beneficial when it comes to language acquisition because language and reading skills engage these same brain areas. Researchers say this is especially beneficial for at-risk children who live in neighborhoods that have low socioeconomic status – areas where children are shown to experience more difficulties with language development.

What These Studies Mean for you and Your Children

There are a lot of benefits for children who are raised as musicians. Clearly this is because musical training has both social and psychological merits. This is especially true when the child is being raised in an underserved community, but it obviously works for all children just the same. This is because the “auditory pathway” that connects your ear to your brain is used to process sound. When you hear something, your eardrums receive it in the form of vibrations of air molecules. These are then converted into a brain signal through a series of elegant mechanisms that go on in your inner ear. That signal is eventually sent to the hearing area of your brain, which is known as the “auditory cortex.” This is located near the sides of your brain. From there your child’s brain is equally impacted on both sides, helping it develop better through even a minimal amount of practice.

Now that you understand how music training can help your child’s brain develop, it’s time to get them started playing the right instrument today.
