What Research Demonstrates in This Regard

Over the past two decades, several researchers have conducted studies of musicians vs. nonmusicians. One study was conducted by the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California. In their 5 year study that started in 2012 they reported differences in musicians’ brains in comparison to nonmusicians. Musicians have better language and mathematical skills, a higher IQ, and overall better academic achievement. There are also differences in musicians’ brains related to their hearing and movement.

How Being a Musician Impacts Children’s Development

In the research that’s compared children musicians to nonmusicians researchers have discovered that being a musician positively impacts a child in several ways, including:

• Musicians can more accurately detect changes in pitch but both the musicians and nonmusicians could tell when the melodies were different. To researchers this indicated that musicians are more attentive.
• Musicians’ brain pathways developed faster. This is the part of the brain that’s responsible for encoding and processing sound.
• Even just two years of instrumental training can accelerate a child’s brain development and sound processing. This is beneficial when it comes to language acquisition because language and reading skills engage these same brain areas. Researchers say this is especially beneficial for at-risk children who live in neighborhoods that have low socioeconomic status – areas where children are shown to experience more difficulties with language development.

There are a lot of benefits for children who are raised as musicians. Clearly this is because musical training has both social and psychological merits. This is especially true when the child is being raised in an underserved community, but it obviously works for all children just the same. This is because the “auditory pathway” that connects your ear to your brain is used to process sound. When you hear something, your eardrums receive it in the form of vibrations of air molecules. These are then converted into a brain signal through a series of elegant mechanisms that go on in your inner ear. That signal is eventually sent to the hearing area of your brain, which is known as the “auditory cortex.” This is located near the sides of your brain. From there your child’s brain is equally impacted on both sides, helping it develop better through even a minimal amount of practice.

He learned piano through the means of his mother Lubov, she taught him everything she knew before she finally took him to Anna Ornatskaya for some real training. It takes a really strong work ethic to become the best of the best, and it was quite obvious that Sergei had that exact edge you were looking for in a winner. His sister Sofia was killed during the diphtheria epidemic in St. Petersburg, which is where he and his family had moved when they lost their property in Semyonovo. He lived a very tough life and it’s pretty apparent that it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, and maybe that’s why he was able to make such beautiful music during his time.

He was a comlposer until the year of 1897, his symphony had officially been recognized as being a “flop” for the terrible premiere under Alexander Glazunov (whom is another musician during those times). He was a strong minded man with a will to succeed, and although he lived in the olden times there’s still a respect for him amongst piano players all across the globe today. He really did open doors when it came to creating new genres of music and things along the lines of that, so we owe a lot to this man (so pay your respects ladies and gentlemen!).

Little did we know that classical musicians can suffer from stage fright.  One would think that after those years of super disciplined training that they would have overcome such a problem but according to writer Ivan Hewett’s story focusing on several legendary classical musicians such as Steven Osborne, Renee Fleming and Vladimir Horowitz.

Each of these greats in the classical industry had their moments of stage fright according to the article and considering the perfection level demanded of classical musicians it’s easy to see why some of them are on pins and needles.  It’s a great responsibility to be a classical musician.  You must perform at a level of perfection other forms of music don’t reach.  You’re always going to be compared to the masters of the ages and with today’s digital computing every note is converted into math and fans and aficionados scour every molecule for imperfections.

Yes, it’s a bit to the extreme but we’re talking classical music here.  Works that most were created hundreds of years ago and every note written down by a legend.  With performances recorded on digital now, people can compare and see which ones are most pleasing.  Now consider you’re a musician and you have to perform live before several hundred, maybe a few thousand people who know every chord and lick and note and variations in the multiples.  That’s a lot of pressure.

Beating stage fright calls for two things.  Working on oneself and having work done on oneself by a professional.  The fear of failure is the culprit here and it can be so overwhelming that it can literally cripple a person.  It’s been seen in other industries where the public are part of the venue.  From acting to politics, even sports, you’ll find people so afraid of what the public will say if they goof up that they can’t hold themselves together long enough for them to perform.  It can and has ruined many a career.

So the first step is to get professional help.  See if the doctors have treated other artists for the problem.  That’s the first mega step right there.  Then you might even want to chat with other people with the same situation.  Support groups are great and it may be that there’s some hidden fear you were unaware of that is the source.  You never know until you try.
