There is a section of his book where a collection of master piano techs and piano aficionados make “staff picks”.  Their picks are based on three criterion classic/perennial favorites (what is popular), good value and the coveted “musical standouts”.  The Yamaha U1 takes the high prize of “musical standout”, but is not considered by those in the know as a good value because it cost over $12,000 with sales tax and delivery!

In the same breath Larry Fine and his colleagues select the Hailun HU5-P professional studio upright piano as “musical standout”. Because the Hailun is a premium piano brand with top components it is even more costly than the Yamaha at a whopping $15,000!  This like new one at just $5995 is a terrific value on what those in the know consider equal to the Yamaha U1 pro series piano.
