Samick is the founder of the European hybrid piano movement (EHP). EHP combine a top notch piano designer, high density of European components and affordable Asian labor rates. Brands like Knabe and Pramberger paved the way for the modern Ritmuller, Kayserburg and Perzina EHP.

Before Steinway dealers were gifted the Essex line of pianos, pianos built by Pearl River for Steinway; Steinway dealers typically carried the Kohler and Campbell line of pianos.

K & C pianos was an American made piano established in 1896. They were known for producing good quality pianos at an affordable price. Samick acquired the brand in the early 2000s and have been producing pianos in Samick’s Korean and Indonesian factories for nearly two decades.

The Kawai’s Millennium III action is an engineering marvel. Under fracture load analysis, the Kawai action is shown to be over 50% stronger than the wooden action like that found in a Yamaha GB1 .  Additionally, Kawai‘s action is more than 30 times resistant to swelling, as compared to a wooden action, like that found in a Yamaha GB1.  Can you think of any state in the USA, which has high moisture, and could benefit from an advanced action like that found in the Kawai GL10?

Kawai’s action is built in Japan. Yamaha‘s action is built in Indonesia.  Which would you prefer?  The Kawai music desk slides front to back. While more expensive Yamaha baby grands have an articulating music desk, the Yamaha GB1K  has a fixed, nonmoving music desk.

The Kawai GL-10 has a full sostenuto, middle pedal. While Yamaha has a full sostenuto pedal in their more expensive, Japanese made models, the Indonesian made Yamaha GB1 only has a bass sustain as its middle pedal.

The Kawai has a 10 year, full transferable warranty.  The Yamaha GB1 has a ten-year, limited non-transferable warranty.

Kawai is known for their warm, mellow, melodic tone. Yamaha is known for their sharp, bright tone.  It is easier for the human ear to listen to Michael Bublé sing for an extended period of time. It is difficult to listen to a mezzo soprano, sing for an extended periods of time. This is because ear fatigue is a real thing.  Kawai‘s tone never offends the ear, no matter how long you listen to it.  Yamaha’s crisp, sharp tone is best enjoyed in small doses.

Steinway was so impressed with Pearl River’s quality of construction and access to a vast network of affordable, skilled hand labor, Steinway & Sons’ of New York chose Pearl River to build their Essex line of pianos!

The 48” Yamaha U1 and Kawai K300 is an easy choice for a pianist with $12,000 to spare. Unfortunately, most pianists cannot afford a new Kawai K300 or a Yamaha U1 and venture into the used market.

China steals intellectual property. This is well documented in the US tech sector and countless other American and European industries, within The People’s Republic. In 2007, PR partnered with Lothar Thomma, formerly of Bechstein. Thomma traveled to Guangzhou and began the redesign of Ritmuller; a brand acquired by Pearl River a few years prior originally out of Göttingen, Germany since 1795.

Shortly after Thomma agreed to partner with Pearl River, it is reported by persons knowledgeable on this matter that Thomma allegedly discovered his designs on other pianos, bearing a different brand in the factory. This was apparently not part of their working agreement. Was that other brand Thomma discovered Pearl River? This is unclear.

What is clear, are the shocking similarities in design in several Pearl River and Ritmuller pianos. Looking at the 48” EU-122 Pearl River and the Ritmuller 48” UHX-121 it can be seen in the use of sand cast plates, the exact dimension and spacing of the back post system, steel reinforcement bar on the top panel, hydraulic fallboard, just to name a few. This apparently enraged Thomma and the partnership quickly dissolved.

Thomma’s designs help to propel the Pearl River EU-122 to international notoriety. In fact, even the respected author Larry Fine of The Piano Book selects the EU-122 as a “Good Value” as seen in the “staff pics” section of Fine’s book. Click the link below to view Fine’s chart.
