A Steinway piano is a brand of the piano, known to be some of the best in the world in terms of quality. The high-end pianos are the most popular in piano schools and used by many professionals and successful concert pianists. The full name of the brand is actually Steinway & Sons and the finely crafted instruments are made in a factory in New York City. The factory has a team of 300 people who work on assembling just six pianos every day. The entire process for any given piano actually takes one whole year given the attention to detail that is put in! There is a similar factory in Germany which creates pianos for markets outside of the Americas.

Whether or not Steinways are the best is still a matter of controversy as most things like this tend to be. They are often cited as the Rolls Royce of the piano world and prices can range from $30,000 up into the hundreds of thousands. Some people like Steve Carver from Julliard in New York stands by the Steinway as the greatest piano in the world. Julliard has the largest number of the piano of any music school in the world, an important statistic for the brand name instrument. Others, like Sara Faust, do not think Steinways alone deserves the top spot in the piano world. She says that other brands like Fazioli and Bosendorfer are comparable and that Steinways just have the brand recognition and marketing power which often gets them slotted as the top piano when in reality it is a much more competitive landscape at the very top.

Steinway was the first piano maker which promoted artists and specifically tried to get their pianos on the stage at large events. Artists which have been seen playing Steinways extend very long but include Lang Lang, Billy Joel, and Harry Connick Jr. This was a marketing coup and cemented them as synonymous with the greatest musicians in the world at the time. It is a legacy that has persisted over time.

The other great thing about this piano is that the value seems to hold well over time. Some models are certainly more valuable than others though with the older Hamburg models being some of the best investments due to the especially high quality of wood and the great craftsmanship. Steinways can now be found all over the world and the company just celebrated its twelfth year in China, a large and emerging market. The pianos used there are served by the Hamburg factory.

If you are looking for a top quality piano which can last you a lifetime and you have a decent budget, the Steinway may be a great option for you. Experts agree and even where there may be a debate on whether Steinway is the sole holder of the greatest piano maker title, there is no doubt that it at least ties for that honor. You can’t go wrong with buying a Steinway piano.

The musicians, in general, tune the instruments as and when they desire. The exception in the field is a pianist who does not receive training for tuning the two hundred and more stringed piano. Whether it is a beginner or a professional the piano players need hiring the appropriate technician for getting their instrument back in order. Don Gilmore, however, has come up with an idea, which, he asserts, can dispense with the requirement of tuners. He has come up with a piano that is self tuning. Gilmore is an expert in mechanics. But coming with the idea required him to be thorough with electronics. He worked with nearly twelve prototypes before he came up with this present version of the electronic piano tuner.

This system would start just as the “on” button, which is located at the lower right side, is pushed. Following this every circuit board activates the magnetic coils which would simultaneously sustain notes from every single string in the piano. Infrared sensor is used for measuring the frequency of each string or to measure the speed with which it vibrates. The computer would compare this frequency with some note that had previously been recorded following a professional tuning. If its original tuning appears off, the piano can be tuned again by the owner. The change thus made can be saved in the computer.

Temperature and size of a room can affect the sound of a piano. In the event of the pitch needing an adjustment, an electrical current is sent by the system through the springs which touch the tuning peg of each string, heating it to 95 degrees. The expansion of springs on heating lowers the pitch. However, vice versa is not possible, which means, cooling the strings cannot be done for raising the pitch. Gilmore gives an explanation for this. He says that the tuning of piano is done when its strings are slightly hot. When it has been switched off, the strings become tighter on being cooled, which is the natural state. Thus, theoretically, the device shall never need increasing the strings’ frequencies. The system is able to tune piano in not more than two minutes. The device is kept on as the piano is played.

The technology invented by Gilmore has been licensed by QRS, a player piano making company, in the year 1999. The price of the device is estimated to be around one thousand dollars by Gilmore. Regular tuning needs nearly a hundred dollars. A casual player gets a tuning for his piano not more than once or sometimes twice in a year. An average player would find the initial expenditure too heavy. Contrarily, concert pianos require being tuned at least once or even twice daily. There are two other factors that are important other than tuning. They are regulation and voicing. In case of concert pianos, the technicians often go about servicing regulation, voicing, and tuning. Change in the sound of a piano due to the size and the temperature of the room may also call for extra service.

However, it’s understandable if you’re not clear as to what a grand piano is. What sets it apart from a standard model? What makes it different? That’s what we’re going to talk about in detail here today so there will be no more confusion.

For starters, this type of piano has a horizontal frame and horizontal strings. The strings stretch out away from the keyboard, relying on gravity to set the strings back at rest after being struck. Now, there isn’t just one type of grand piano. There are several. The distinctions are largely based on sizing. Let’s take a look at each:

Concert Grand. This type of piano measures between 7-10 feet long.

Parlor Grand. This type measures between 6-7 feet long.

Baby Grand. This type is the smallest of all the grands and measures at 5 feet long.

So, why would someone opt for a huge concert grand when they can get the smaller baby grand and experience the same quality sound? Actually, you don’t get the same quality of sound. The longer a piano is, the longer its strings are. And the longer its strings are, the richer its sound is. Shorter pianos tend to have a greater amount of inharmonicity, which detracts from the richness of the tone and leaves the listener considering it to be harsh or sharp.

This is particularly apparent when playing several octaves at once. The notes are narrow. On a smaller grand piano, the octaves have to be stretched to accommodate for the inharmonicity but this creates other problems and creates imbalance among the octaves. This is why opting for the full sized concert grand is so wonderful because stretching octaves still results in a completely harmonic sound. It will always sound brilliant and rich, never dull or too sharp.

This is not to say that the baby grand doesn’t have its place. It certainly does. The sound is still richer than any keyboard out there and its small enough to fit in most homes, making it perfect for practice and everyday use. When it comes to performance, however, the concert grand is preferable because it’s full sized and provides the truest of true harmonics. The listeners will get the full experience that was intended when the music was first written. That’s reason enough to spring for a grand piano, don’t you think.
